About the Artist
Madelyne Joan Templeton, an artist known for her focus on creating monumental public art murals and paintings. Driven by her passion for creating meaningful connections through her artwork, she reached out to HJC to share the exciting news about the prestigious grant she secured from the Upstate Creative Corp Grant Committee. She expressed her inspiration to create a community mural in the Historic Chinatown Alley, focusing on environmental awareness, promoting ecological wellness along with Chinese American history themes. We were honored by her idea and deeply touched by her desire to share our story, making a meaningful impact on what you see today in the Historic Chinatown Alley.

This stunning piece of art beautifully intertwines the rich heritage of the Historic Chinatown Alley’s last pioneer late Dr. Kenneth Kendall Chew with the hopeful inspiration of the next generation, his granddaughter Sophia Chew. Madelyn’s art depicts its medicinal Chinese plants which used to be grown by the Chinese community.

The mural contains Lotus flowers which has many symbolic meanings in Chinese culture, including beauty, purity, and wealth. The lotus (蓮花, lián huā, 荷花, hé huā) is known as the gentleman's flower because it grows out from the mud, pure and unstained.

Traditional Chinese Medicine
The Chew family’s origin story begins with Traditional Chinese Medicine. In fact, during the Historic Chinatown’s reign a beautiful Chrysanthemum garden was parallel to this mural on Rio Street. Chrysanthemum is a symbol of longevity and wealth, and a wish for peace. In China, it was believed to have the power of life and according to legend, its roots were used as a headache remedy like asprin.
