RED BLUFF, Calif. — The Helen and Joe Chew Foundation is set to host a vibrant celebration for the Chinese Lunar New Year this weekend, marking the Year of the Snake. The event aims to share Chinese culture and history with the local community.

Jessica Chew, granddaughter of Joe Chew, said her family was among the original settlers of Red Bluff's Chinatown, arriving in 1865. They initially opened a traditional herbal medicine shop and later established 'Ming Terrace,' which operated until the 1970s.

"A big purpose for our non-profit is as we look at the past and understand our history during the gold rush, the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, how do we reflect on those issues today, how we bring people together, how do we recognize our common goal, common interest and also represent diversity," said Jessica Chew.

Bruce Chin, nephew of Joe Chew, added, "People have a lot more in common than differences and also we are all part of the fabric of this community and the nation."

Chew said the foundation's work is rewarding as they rejuvenate history while celebrating with the community.

The celebrations will begin tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Tehama County Fairgrounds in Tyler Jelly Hall, having been moved indoors due to weather conditions. Attendees can expect food, vendors, live performances, and more.
