Oroville, CA - Chinese Cemetery & Historic Temple
The Temple is magnificent in structure and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a California Landmark. The location is 1500 Broderick St, Oroville, CA .
The most incredible part is that bestowed us is a red brick Temple that was commissioned by Tongzhi Emperor and Empress of China and we are lucky enough that this town has such a big touch on Chinese American history. The Temple is comprised of a Chan Room for Confucian meditation, the Moon Temple, for Buddhist rites, and the Council Room, for community functions, a Chinese tapestry hall, a Display hall and a Chinese garden.
The Historic Chinese Cemetery located at 2780-2800 Feather River Blvd, Oroville, CA 95965 is in dire condition. Although, still worth an ancestry visit to pay tribute to our heritage. The points: 39° 29.307′ N, 121° 34.423′ W. Marker is in Oroville, California, in Butte County.
According to the landmark, the cemetery was established in 1850 with its last burial in 1944. The site reflects the laborers that arrived during the Gold Rush who worked at Lava Beds, Bagdad, Bidwell Bar and Ophir City. Luckily on August 7th, 1975, the site was landmarked all thanks to Native Sons of the Golden West, Grand Parlor & Agronaut Parlor No. 8.
You know deep down there is a beautiful story, so work your way through the dry brush to the rear of the rectangle parcel. You will start to see a concrete pad. As you become closer, you will notice there are several red bricks within the cement.
The markings 寧邑 Ning County (Taishan) on this headstone is also from the same family clan as the person who was buried in Chico, CA. We discovered at the Chico Museum, there are three headstones that were found and put inside the Museum. Upon entry, on the right hand side, walk towards the Chinese Temple’s artifacts. Towards the back right hand corner there are three headstones, of which, 2 headstones contain the same village.
